Infineon Technologies Austria AG
Headquartered in Villach, Infineon Technologies Austria AG is Infineon’s globally leading competence unit for power semiconductors. The company consolidates expertise in research and development, production, and global responsibility for business performance.
Infineon Technologies Austria AG (IFAT) is a 100% subsidiary company of the worldwide operating semiconductor producer Infineon Technologies AG and was founded in April 1999. Infineon Austria develops and manufactures semiconductor and system solutions for the business areas “Automotive”, “Industrial & Multimarket”, “Wireless Products/Sensors”, and “Security and Chip Card IC”. In Austria about 1,200 of more than 3,300 employees are working at five sites (Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz, Linz, and Vienna) in the field of R&D. In the year 2014 expenses in R&D were 320 million EURO, which corresponds to 25 percent of the business volume of 1300 million Euro. Hence, Infineon Austria has the biggest R&D unit for microelectronics in Austria. This requires a high level of comprehensive technology know-how in modeling, design, and fabrication which is the basis for the global market success of Infineon.
Role:
Infineon Technologies Austria AG is the overall coordinator of PowerBase being also responsible for WP3. This work package focuses on the installation of a full scale industrial manufacturing line for large wafer diameter GaN-on-Si technology including the GaN hetero epitaxy on silicon wafers for normally-on and normally-off power transistors with a wide range of voltage classes up to 600V. By addressing this issue, the WP lays the foundation for an European high volume manufacturing base for advanced GaN power electronics.
Key Contribution:
Energy efficiency, mobility, and security are the three central challenges that Infineon Technologies Austria AG addresses with its semiconductor and system solutions. Innovation is the driver and at the same time binding element across all product groups, from analog and mixed-signal circuits to high-frequency and power semiconductors all the way to Embedded Control solutions. The site’s excellent process know-how and high level of expertise have made it possible to develop the world’s first production process for power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. For the project PowerBase, Infineon Technologies Austria AG brings in its experience gained in the pilot line activities regarding 300mm power semiconductors and accompanied by three publically funded projects comprising large consortia. Additionally, with its long R&D history regarding wide bandgap semiconductor devices and the participation in funded FP7 research project addressing GaN switches, the company brings in vital expertise which can be built on.
